You can play in single-player mode for all of three houses. All you games will be saved on server and you can continue playing it any time. The game was ported over to the Sega Genesis in 1993 under the title Dune: The Battle For Arrakis. Dune 2000, a remake released in 1998, took good use of the advancement of computers, and replaced the drawn cutscenes of the original with Westwood Studios' near-trademark Full Motion Video cutscenes, slightly more tactical objectives (Rather than 'Kill the Harkonnen' you get to 'Protect the.

Description of Dune

A neat adventure/strategy hybrid from Cryo, this game casts you as Paul Atreides, the protagonist in the classic Dune series by Frank Herbert.

Although the game is fairly linear, there's enough strategy elements to keep things interesting: you must allocate your followers (the native Fremen) to various jobs, maximize spice production, and ultimately fight the Harkonnen with armies. Also features stunning VGA graphics depicting passages of time. Easily one of the most graphically stunning games ever made, and one of the most unique. Recommended!

Note: The download here is full CD-ROM version, complete with video clips from David Lynch's movie based on the book, and full speech. You can also download the smaller disk version if you want :)

I love the game but I am sad that I can't hear anything. No voices no music. Of course if you play it in french, the music is there. Is there any updated way to get music on the english version?

Loved the original game

FYI there are no real sound effects, just music. Dune2 has some sound effects.
I wasted 30 mins trying to turn them on lol.

Every time I try to create a design the computer will stall and take approximately 90 seconds to respond to the command. Silhouette cameo software v3 free.

Simplemente magnífico, me encantó este juego. Lo jugué allá por 1994 o 1995, y me encantó, y después volví a jugarlo varias veces más. Es mi juego favorito junto con 'Monkey Island'. ¡Qué tiempos aquellos!

I am astonished that I have not seen this game before, in all of my retro gaming life. This soundtrack is blowing me away. It alone makes this a must-have for any DOS gamer, as it pushes the YM3812 chip to its absolute limits. I know that chips limits, as I'm a musician and use it quite often in chiptune works.
Stop reading this and download Dune already!

A great game.
Amazing atmosphere & graphisms (for that time). A great musical score, that was published as a music CD, I still have it.
As far as the strategy goes, the game is not hard nor complex. On my first try I failed because I built my armies too slowly and was killed by the emperor troops (failed to deliver enough spice). On the next try, I easily slaughtered the computer.
It is interesting that you can win by using water and destroying the spice but I only managed to do that once, almost by accident. It seems that winning by fighting is much easier. But I may have missed a tactic..

@ackool & @Licurg
INSTALL.EXE modifies COMM.BAT and not DUNE.BAT.
Setup the game and DOSbox to use Soundblaster and run COMM.BAT.
I think this floppy version is better than the CD one.

Licurg2013-06-300 point DOS version

@ackool: If you want the sound, you're gonna have to download the CD version of the game, also available on this site, just type in 'Dune' in the search bar and you'll see it.

Can anyone tell me if the sound should be working in the dos version and if so how you set it up,Thank You

Salut a tous.
Merci.

One of the best, and one of the first DOS games I've played. Been years. I had no internet or walkthru back then, but I managed to finish the game on my own. Probably the first RPG-ish game I've played too. Well I hope the enhanced version, Dune CD, could be found here soon. I don't know or can't find any official patch to the floppy version, I'm thinking it had only one release version. And probably DuneCD is of higher version number since it is an enhanced edition afterall. Thanks, Chief.

Actually, there is a high replayability, because you can attack the Harkonnen from different regions, with different results. Also you can use ecology or skip it altogether, and certain events may or may not take place depending on the pace you play at.
And Chani looks much better than Harrah, my opinion:P

JOM2012-03-280 point DOS version

It is quite a bit movie (Lynch's movie from eighties) like game. Personally, I would tell book was better, but it still great game/movie. Re-play value is not high, there is more or less nothing new. If you never play - try.
The only strange thing - Harrah looks better than Chani.

One of the finest strategy game of this time, still rocks.

Video games[edit]

To date, there have been five licensed Dune-related video games released. There have also been many Dune-based MUDs (Multi-User Dimension) and browser-based online games, all created and run by fans.[5]

Dune (1992)[edit]

1992's Dune from Cryo Interactive/Virgin Interactive blends adventure with strategy.[6][7] Loosely following the story of the 1965 novel Dune and using many visual elements from the 1984 film of the same name by David Lynch, the game casts the player as Paul Atreides, with the ultimate goal of driving the Harkonnens from the planet Dune and taking control of its valuable export, the spice.[6] Key to success is the management of spice mining, military forces, and ecology as the player amasses allies and skills.[6]

Dune II (1992)[edit]

Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty, later retitled Dune II: Battle for Arrakis for the Mega Drive/Genesis port, was released in December 1992 from Westwood Studios/Virgin Interactive.[8][9] Often considered to be the first 'mainstream modern real-time strategy game', Dune II established many conventions of the genre.[8] Only loosely connected to the plot of the novels or films, the game pits three interplanetary houses — the Atreides, the Harkonnens, and the Ordos — against each other for control of the planet Arrakis and its valuable spice, all while fending off the destructive natural forces of the harsh desert planet itself.[8]

Dune 2000 (1998)[edit]

Dune 2000, a 1998 remake of Dune II from Intelligent Games/Westwood Studios/Virgin Interactive, added improved graphics and live-actioncutscenes.[10] Though gameplay is similar to its predecessor, Dune 2000 features an enhanced storyline and functionality.[10]

Emperor: Battle for Dune (2001)[edit]

Emperor: Battle for Dune (Intelligent Games/Westwood Studios/Electronic Arts) was released on June 12, 2001.[11] A sequel to Dune 2000, the real-time strategy game features 3D graphics and live-action cutscenes and casts players as Atreides, Harkonnens, or Ordos.[11][12]

Frank Herbert's Dune (2001)[edit]

Released in 2001 by Cryo Interactive/DreamCatcher Interactive, Frank Herbert's Dune is a 3D video game based on the 2000 Sci Fi Channelminiseries of the same name.[13] As Paul Muad'Dib Atreides, the player must become leader of the Fremen, seize control of Dune, and defeat the evil Baron Harkonnen.[13] The game was not a commercial or critical success, and Cryo subsequently filed for bankruptcy in July 2002.[14]

Dune Generations (2001, cancelled)[edit]

Dune Video Game 2017

In 2001, Cryonetworks disclosed information about Dune Generations, an online, 3D real-time strategy game set in the Dune universe.[15][16] An official website for the upcoming game featured concept images, a brief background story and description of the persistent gameworld, and a list of frequently asked questions.[17] The game would be constructed using Cryo's own online multimedia development framework SCOL.[18]

Within 'the infrastructure of a permanent and massive multiplayer world that exists online,' Dune Generations would let players assume control of a dynasty in the Dune universe, with the goal of first mastering the natural resources of their own homeworlds and ultimately rising in power and influence through conflicts and alliances with other player dynasties.[16][19] Each of the three available dynasty types — traders, soldiers, or mercenaries — would provide a different playing experience, all with the long-term goal of gaining control of Arrakis and its valuable spice.[16][19]

A preview video trailer was released in November 2001.[20] The game was still in the alpha testing stage in February 2002,[21] and the project was ultimately halted after Cryo filed for bankruptcy in July 2002.[14]

Dune Wars mod for Civilization IV[edit]

The Dune Wars mod[22] is a total conversion of Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword to the Dune setting. The mod was featured by Tom Chick in the relaunched Tom vs Bruce series.[23] In 2015 an updated version of the mod called Dune Wars: Revival was released.[24]

Frank Herbert's Dune Video Game

Based on the PennMUSH text environment, Multi-User Shared Hallucination, DuneMUSH, began in December 1992 and ran through August 1994.[25][26] MUSH, Dune III, was later created on MUSHPark. Its timeline was set 100 years prior to that of the novel, and ran for a few years before closing in 2011.[27]
